Physical Appearance | The taproot ranges from globular to long and tapered. Skin and flesh colors are usually dark purplish-red, though some can be nearly white or orange. Beetroots should be smooth, firm, and unblemished; medium-sized specimens are the most tender. The oblong leaves typically have a red petiole (leaf stem) and midrib. They can be harvested continually throughout the first growing season, although production slows in the heat of summer. |
Growing Condition | Choose a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil that doesn’t become waterlogged. Thoroughly weed the ground and add plenty of organic matter, such as garden compost or well-rotted manure, to improve drainage and enrich the soil. |
Germination Rate | 70% minimum |
Taste | Sweet, mild flavor. Beetroot is a good source of nutrients, including fiber, folate, and antioxidants. It has a sweet and earthy flavor and can be eaten raw, cooked, or pickled. |
Appearance | Deep red or purple. |
Tolerance | Beetroot is sensitive to overwatering and prone to root rot, leaf spotting, and scab. It requires well-drained soil and should be watered only at the base of the plants to prevent these issues. |
Use Case | Balcony or terrace. |
