| Physical Appearance | Cowpea plants can be erect, trailing, or climbing, growing 50–100 cm high. Flowers can be pale green, light blue, purple, white, or yellowish, usually in pairs or threes. Pods range from 8–120 cm long, can be straight or slightly curved, and turn cream to brown or reddish purple when dry. Seeds can be mottled or uniform in color, ranging from white or cream to maroon or brown to black. |
| Foliage Type | The leaflets are hairless, with the terminal leaflet symmetrical and the remaining pair more or less triangular to egg-shaped. The leaves are about 10 cm long and 7 or 8 cm wide. |
| Growing Condition | Soil: Cowpea can grow in a variety of soils, including sandy loam, red loam, coarse gravel, and heavy loam. Best temperature range is 21°C to 35°C. In irrigated areas, sow in summer; in rainfed areas, after the rains from March to mid-July. |
